XML: An enabler of knowledge management

Knowledge management is a relatively young discipline, which is attracting a lot of attention, particularly in the light of a globalised marketplace. Organisations interact and exchange information across divisions, departments, firms and even industries. Extensible markup language or XML is a technology, which can help facilitate or improve this exchange of information across boundaries. It enables better knowledge management by reducing the friction caused when exchanging information from one place to another through standardising organisational data definitions. As well as exploring the major application areas of XML, this paper looks at a new knowledge management architecture, which identifies where XML can play a part in enabling this discipline. The advantages, disadvantages, possible costs and expected benefits of using XML are discussed and it is analysed against the Technology Acceptance Model to judges its potential suitability to a user of a knowledge management tool. This paper also discusses future challenges and perspectives of using the technology.
